History
This replica of the film car came about because the previous owner of the car, Tony Green, who had a world renowned collection of Chitty memorabilia was always being asked if he owned one of the original Chitty cars - 4 complete versions were made for the film and are still in existence today.
Tony asked MGM for permission to build a car as they are the copyright holders to the name and all intellectual property rights. MGM were very helpful in not only granting him permission but also allowing him to call the car 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' on the legal documents. He then looked for a registration number and was offered GEN 22 - Chitty's double!
The boatwork was finished by one of the original builders of the film cars - Terry Dann. He had copies of the original film car plans.
Chitty weighs around 1.5 tonnes, is nearly 18’ long and 6’ wide. The brass lamps are all original period pieces, the brass snake horn came from one of the original Chitty cars. The engine is a 3L V6 Ford with an automatic BorgWarner gearbox.
Chitty is shortly to be fitted with electric wings and propellers so she’ll look just like the car that took off from Baron Bomburst’s castle at the end of the film.
